How many of you have heard of the show FATHER KNOWS BEST? The show released October 1954 - May 1960 - Jim Anderson ( Robert Young) showed how he cope with the everyday problems of his growing family. The show popped into my head when I was thinking of how families are coping with everyday problems today.

What is happening in your family, how is your family coping - Excellent, Medium Well, Good, Not Good, Poor. You know best how you are doing. There are ups and downs in life and situations that appear unexpectedly which can have you emotionally overwhelmed and unsure what to do. I have a couple of questions for you to think about.

1. What do you think is happening when the family is doing excellent?

  • Family is working like an oiled machine with family full of energy, having fun and looking forward to getting together whether it is hiking, going away for the weekend or hanging out at home having a backyard barbecue.

2. What do you think is happening when the family is not good or doing poorly?

  • Family member (s) hanging out in their rooms with the door closed, not wanting to sit at the table to have a meal, or wanting to escape from the house due to constant drama of frustrations and fighting.

3. What resources are working for you to work through when faced with situations that are overwhelming the family?

What were your answers to question1? - build on what is working so when those troubling moments erupt you have the foundation of what is working to implement.

What were your answers to question 2? - the family is overwhelmed to the point that there is nothing working and don't know where to start to make it better. This drains your energy, feel hopeless and want to run away from it all.

What were your answers to question 3? - don't know who to reach out to or waiting for an appointment.

Something to consider is having another perspective what is happening to someone who is not emotionally close to the situation. It could be that individuals are feeling frustrated because no one is listening to what is said or tip toeing on eggshells of how to approach the situation.

We are having an information session for families who are looking for an opportunity to learn about how families have learned how to manage situations that has the family disengaged and stressed with constant conflicts.
