The Power of Cognitive Flexibility
Learning to apply what you've mastered in one context to another is a powerful way to build cognitive flexibility. Transferring skills and knowledge to new situations not only enhances your adaptability but also creates a greater impact.
I recently put this concept to the test as the toastmaster for an Igniters meeting on Tuesday evening. The theme of the day was "Shaking it Up!" Instead of following the usual order, we conducted the meeting backwards. Everyone embraced the idea, including the speaker, Nandini, who decided to shake things up by selecting three participants to speak on specific topics.
The result? The room was filled with smiles and laughter. Many attendees shared how they were inspired to "shake up" their routines. One guest even mentioned how much she enjoyed the meeting, calling it fun and deciding to join the group.
Why Shaking Up Your Routine Matters
Changing your routine can spark creativity and help you think in new ways. For example:
It encourages you to approach problems from different angles.
It helps you better understand perspectives that differ from your own.
It improves your ability to communicate, resolve conflicts, and adapt to various situations.
Have you ever disagreed with someone's point of view? By practicing cognitive flexibility, you might find it easier to see things from their perspective and build stronger connections.
The Flourishing Life Questionnaire
At Cool Family Solutions, we emphasize the importance of self-awareness and growth. That’s why participants in our courses—whether family or workplace sessions—complete The Flourishing Life Questionnaire, developed by Dr. Wayne Hammond.
Here’s how it works:
Participants take the questionnaire before the session to identify areas for growth and existing strengths.
They complete it again after the session to measure progress and see tangible results.
When I completed the questionnaire, I discovered that cognitive flexibility was an area where I could improve. By challenging myself to think in both creative and practical ways, I’ve been able to transfer knowledge across different areas of learning—and the results have been transformative.
